Sadrists Sign Oath to fight US Troops

Shiites from the Sadr Movement in Iraq have been signing oaths in blood to struggle against the foreign military occupation of their country. This ritual affirmation comes despite the command from Sayyid Muqtada al-Sadr to lay down their arms. Sadr has also spoken of creating a special forces unit to kill US and other coalition troops, despite the cease-fire he affirmed between his Mahdi Army and the US and Iraqi forces. Al-Sadr had called for these pledges signed in blood, but appeared to see them as binding the signers to a non-violent struggle. This AFP article suggests most of the signers do not see it that way.

A Sunni Arab member of parliament said Friday that he does not expect Iraq and the US to sign a security agreement. He thinks too many insuperable obstacles stand in the way, including that of immunity for US troops in Iraqi courts.

Al-Hayat reports in Arabic that Kurdistan officials are complaining that the government of PM Nuri al-Maliki is marginalizing them.

The 11,000 Palestinian refugees in Iraq, expelled from their homeland by the Israelis, now live in fear and some are dwelling in squalor in border camps. It is hell to be stateless-- and has disenfranchising consequences in the 21st century analogous to slavery in the eighteenth.

Speaking of slavery, Nepalese workers are suing Kellogg, Brown and Root for human trafficking, claiming that a subcontractor pressed them into involuntary labor in Iraq.

Sunni Arab Awakening Council members in Diyala Province are Complaining to the US military that the Iraqi Army is harassing them.

Al-Hayat reports in Arabic that the sermonizers at Friday prayers in Iraq on Saturday were pretty unanimous across age lines that the US must set a timetable for withdrawing US troops from Iraq..

Iran Alleges US Bribing Iraq MPs on SOFA

The USG Open Source Center translates an Iranian radio broadcast that alleges the US is trying to bribe members of the Iraqi parliament to pass the proposed security agreement with the US, with the alleged bribes totaling $3 bn. Source

'US bribing Iraqi MPs to sign deal'
Thu, 29 May 2008 13:40:04 GMT
The US has offered bribes to Iraqi MPs to lure them into endorsing a security deal that critics believe would make Iraq a US colony.

Sources in Iraq's parliament told Press TV on Thursday that Washington has offered three-million dollars in bribe to the lawmakers who sign the "framework accord."

Under the agreement, the US would be allowed to set up at least 13 permanent military bases in Iraq and US citizens would be granted immunity from legal prosecution.

Iraqi lawmakers, however, vowed that they would never sign the agreement which would turn their country into 'a US colony'. Source

Roads to Iraq:
American Oil companies offered five million dollars to each Iraqi MP to pass the Oil law

Reported today on Akhbar Alkhaleej newspaper [link updated]

An Iraqi MP preferred to remain anonymous told the newspaper that highly confidential negotiations took place by representatives from American oil companies, offering $5 million to each MP who votes in favor of the Oil and Gas law.

The amount that could be paid to pass the votes do not exceed $150 million dollars in the case of $5 million to each MP, pointing out that the Oil law requires 138 votes to pass, which the Americans want to guarantee in many ways, including vote-buying, intimidation and threats!

Focusing on the heads of parliamentary blocs and influential figures in the parliament to ensure the votes, the Americans guaranteed the Kurdish votes in advance but they are seeking enough votes to pass and approve the law as soon as possible. Source

A Sunni Arab member of parliament said Friday that he does not expect Iraq and the US to sign a security agreement.

I was already writing this in the middle of July (including on IC, if I remember correctly).

When you think about it logically, from Maliki's point of view, there are no conditions he could sign on, where he could be certain of avoiding being accused of giving away Iraqi oil and sovereignty, including the risk of some confused nutter in his bodyguard - Shi'a - deciding to empty his kalashnikov into him. The publication of the SOFA conditions in June really provoked a visceral reaction in Iraq, though it has not been much commented by the media. If, in addition, it is the case that the Marja'iyya have decided they have had enough of US occupation, as seems to be.

Far easier not to sign at all. Better prevaricate, and not commit himself.

In this connection I was interested by the news that Maliki has changed the negotiation team to one from his own office. Goes in this sense, I think.

It would not surprise me at all to discover that Maliki thinks that domestic pressures are far more important than whatever the US thinks. He is very Iraqi.

Naturally the US negotiators would not be able to understand that. They still think he is playing chicken, to get the best conditions, according to two reports this week.

Dear Professor Cole

My bloodpressure is going through the roof.

This is the kind of twaddle I would expect to see coming from Governor Hilton

On the economic front, Kuwait has gotten a court order in Quebec related to airplanes scheduled to be delivered to Iraq. The planes are being seized as security for the reparations Iraq never paid Kuwait and Kuwait has refused to forgive. It is difficult to advance economically if items one purchases abroad cannot be delivered. http://www.iht.com/articles/ap/2008/08/29/america/NA-Canada-Bombardier-Iraq.php http://www.canada.com/montrealgazette/news/business/story.html?id=07eaaac4-6f1f-4795-b0f2-4508657eea2c
