A soldier who just returned described how peaceful it was. His vehicle was only blown up once and he merely said that it was not safe if you left camp. Maybe that's what John means -- our military installations in Iraq are peaceful and stable.

Good to know that he's back on the job at the National Hurricane Center. Looks like it will be a busy season.

Dear Professor Cole

I suspect that the true indicator of whether Iraq is a "peaceful stable country" is if the refugees in Syria, Jordan and the Displaced Persons camps in Iraq are able to return home.

The hidden problem in this is that those who left areas of the cities which have been ethnically cleansed will have problems reclaiming their flats and houses.

As the refugees are said to have a large number of the professional and middle class, their willingness to return is probably the bellwether of the state of Iraq.

Recent attacks on US backed Sunni Forces and the slowness of the integation of the Sunni into the Iraqi Army may indicate that there is no future for the Sunni Middle Class in Iraq.

Which leaves the World with an enormous problem.

I kept noting these incidents when checking stories in HuffPo and also noted that they were getting scant coverage elsewhere.

The very notion that all is on-track in Iraq, as some believers try to put out is simply deluded. But then McCain doesn't need any help in that department - this is a guy who in a 2007 interview forgot the make of his own car and had to be reminded by an aide that it was a Cadillac CTS.

What McCain doesn't know is truly frightening.

Lest we not forget that McCain also said, twice mind you, that al qaeda was getting its training in Iran, has twice recently referred to czechoslovakia, and has insisted that gen. Petraeus can ride around Baghdad in an 'unarmored' hummer....good god, and that's the short list....
