The Decline of the Israeli Right and the Increasing Desperation of the 'Anti-Semitism' Charge

The great divide between liberal Jewish Americans and the Israeli Right has lurked as an issue since the Likud Party first challenged Labor dominance in the late 1970s. It is now coming to a boiling point, even as Israel's reputation in the world is sinking. As rightwing policies more visibly fail, the Likudniks are flailing around making fools of themselves by smearing critics of those policies as racists. (Anyone who knows how Likud supporters talk among themselves about Arabs and other outsiders can only be amused at their impudent hypocrisy in playing the race card.)

The mess that Mossad's mercenaries (some of them possibly from the Fateh Palestinian faction also opposed to Hamas) made of a routine political assassination in Dubai of a Hamas agent funneling arms from Iran is a blow against Ithe image of daring, stone-cold competence cultivated by the Israeli security establishment. The killing went smoothly, but it transpires that the assassins had not only stolen the passport identities of British and Irish citizens, but those of several Israeli dual citizens originally from the UK, as well. Mossad thus made potential problems for those passport holders for the rest of their lives, since Interpol will be interested every time the numbers pop up at an airport check-in.

The incident has roiled diplomatic relations with Ireland and the UK. But it is also controversial in Israel (not the assassination but the bumbling clumsy identity theft against Israeli citizens). After all, branding an innocent Israeli an assassin is a sort of blood libel. Indeed, casual political assassination as a routine Israeli method of statecraft makes many Jews uncomfortable, as is visible in Steven Spielberg's film, Munich.

But the harbingers of isolation are numerous. The Netanyahu government has largely defied President Obama's requests for a halt to the colonization of the West Bank (a freeze on building new settlements in part of the West Bank, while existing settlements are expanded and Palestinians are thrown in the street in Jerusalem does not count).

The Israeli siege of the children of Gaza, some of whom are looking skinnier, is impossible to justify and provoked even a US congressman to urge a forceful breaking of the blockade. The Goldstone Report on Israeli war crimes (and which also acknowledges Hamas war crimes) for the United Nations is likely to attain an official status of a sort denied to previous such clear-eyed examinations of Israeli military action. (Israel's leadership suffered not the least from dropping nearly a million cluster bombs on the civilian farms of southern Lebanon in the last 3 days of the 2006 Lebanon War, though this targeting of civilians was illegal and the US Congress had stipulated that the weapons could not be used that way).

The reactionary parties of Likud, Shas, and Yisrael Beitenu have nothing in common with the vast majority of Jewish Americans, who voted for Barack Obama and are generally more progressive than non-Jewish Americans. The establishment of a liberal Jewish lobby, J Street, which supports a two-state solution (Israel and Palestine side by side), is a manifestation of the increasing unease of progessive Jewish Americans with the policies and aggressive wars of rightwing Israeli governments. Jewish Americans have been key to the securing of many of our civil liberties in this country and a major voice for peace and for culture and the arts, and a thug like Avigdor Lieberman as foreign minister surely makes many of them uneasy. It is no accident that the Likud government has snubbed a delegation of US Congress members to Israel who support J Street. The Netanyahu government is all about colonizing more of the West Bank and preventing the rise of a Palestinian state.

Then you have Holocaust survivor Hedy Epstein supporting the movement to break the Israeli blockade of Gaza civilians, including children.

The Israeli occupation and colonization of the West Bank provoked former president Jimmy Carter to warn of an Apartheid situation. Although he was viciously attacked by the likes of Alan Dershowitz and subjected to the typical dirty tricks deployed by fanatical nationalists of all stripes, he has been vindicated by remarks of Israeli politician Ehud Barak, who just said the same thing Carter had.

The occupation is also provoking an increasing move to boycott Israel, especially firms and concerns based in the West Bank settlements or connected to the Lebanon and Gaza Wars. The second largest union of Canadian federal employees has joined such a boycott. During the Gaza War, Scandinavian grocery chains cancelled their orders for Israeli fruit, and the South African longshoremen declined to unload Israeli ships.

It is anxiety over the prospect that the current far-right Netanyahu government is becoming increasingly isolated from the world community, including the Obama administration in the US, and from a new generation of progressive Jewish Americans that explains the rash of scurrilous charges of 'anti-Semitism' being thrown around by the 'Israel-can-do-no-wrong' crowd in recent days.

You had Leon Wieseltier's unsubstantiated and shameful attack on Andrew Sullivan, which Sullivan effectively refuted -- as did Glenn Greenwald, Matthew Ygglesias, and a number of others. As Greenwald points out, the use of the 'anti-Semitism' charge against ordinary every day non-bigotted people who just don't agree with some policy of Israel or of the American Enterprise Institute risks making the term meaningless and cheapening it, which can hardly be good for the Jews.

Meanwhile, the main strategy of the Israeli and Jewish-American Right to preserve Israeli capacity to continue the colonization and to act belligerently in the region had been the overthrow of Saddam Hussein in Iraq. That strategem has failed, as I argued in Salon. The Shiite fundamentalists who have taken over Baghdad are pro-Hizbullah and pro-Palestinian. (Hizbullah was in part set up by the Islamic Mission Party, Da'wa, of Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, and Da'wa supported Hamas in the recent Gaza War). Moreover, Baghdad has ceased helping contain Iran for the Sunni Arab world and the West, and is now a close ally of Tehran. The prospect of a well-armed, 250,000-man Iraqi army now being reconstituted, and riddled with agents of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps, must be a matter of consternation for Israelis. Only Jordan separates them from Iraq, now an outpost of the Shiite religious parties allied with Khamenei. The Neoconservatives, such as Richard Perle, David Frum, Paul Wolfowitz, Irv Lewis Libby, Michael Rubin, Douglas Feith, John Bolton, Larry Franklin and others thus not only shot themselves in the foot, but they shot Israel in the chest.

This Iraq strategy, which intended to stop the Rabin peace process and prevent the return of Gaza and the West Bank to the Palestinians for their state, was laid out by Richard Perle, Douglas Feith, and other Neoconservatives in a white paper for Bibi Netanyahu in 1996. Many of the authors were subsequently put in high office by Bush-Cheney and pushed for an American war on Iraq with dirty tricks and false propaganda in 2002-2003. They included Canadian gadfly journalist David Frum, who authored Bush's 2002 'Axis of Evil' speech in consultation with Perle. The mostly Jewish Neoconservatives were only one faction in the Bush-Cheney coalition that wanted regime change in Baghdad, which included the Christian Right, Big Oil, and the military-industrial complex. However influential, they were not 'in control' and most Jewish Americans opposed their ideas and policies.

Frum, a Canadian who only became naturalized as a US citizen in 2007, was important in the early years of the Bush presidency and crafted many of the falsehoods and propaganda points that got up the Iraq War. He bears a heavy responsibility for the unnecessary deaths of over 4000 US military personnel, for the deaths of some 600,000 Iraqis, and for the displacement of nearly 4 million Iraqis. In a just world, David Frum would be on trial for his role in severe violations of international law, as would Bush, Cheney, Perle, and the rest of those bald-faced liars and warmongers.

To cover his prevarications and failed policies, Frum joined Wieseltier in playing the anti-Semitism card at CNN this week, piling on Sullivan but also smearing yours truly. His exhibit A was a passage in which I complained about supporters of the Israeli Likud party attempting to enlist the US military to fight wars on behalf of that party's platform. The column was mainly about Larry Franklin, a Catholic, who went to jail on espionage charges for passing classified Pentagon documents to AIPAC and the Israeli embassy.

Since supporters of the Likud government, Christian and Jewish, are even now attempting to foment a US war on Iran on behalf of rightwing objectives in Israel (Iran is no more a threat to the United States than Iraq had been), I rather stand by my condemnation of them.

As someone who travels to Israel, collaborates on research with Israeli colleagues, supports Israelis' right to live normal and fulfilling lives in security, and recently stayed in a kubbutz, I am puzzled by Frum's innuendo. I am critical of Israeli policy in Gaza and the West Bank, but then so are former prime ministers Ehud Olmert and Ehud Barak; I think I probably haven't said anything on the issue that clear-eyed Israelis haven't already said themselves.

But I will complain about David Frum's dual loyalties. I am very suspicious of a rightwing Stephen Harper-style Canadian becoming so influential in the United States. I like my Canadians in their normal, sane estate. I fear he may be influencing my country in directions that benefit rightwing Canadian politicians and war industries in Ottawa. Although Canada has also leant us treasures like William Shatner, Dan Akroyd and Paul Schaeffer, for which I'm grateful, the latter never became ensconced in the halls of power or encouraged anyone to fire a shot in anger off the set.

I have a good Jewish friend of 28 years in Minneapolis. I had the chance to visit with him and his wife this past summer. He was in great personal agony over his decision to leave his liberal synagogue. I would describe him as a deeply thoughtful and very intelligent person and, as he told me, he simply could no longer be around people who unconditionally support Israel and refuse to even consider the horrors being visited on the Palestinians by Israeli policies.

He told me of watching a panel discussion on French television where a Jewish psychiatrist tried to raise the issue of the Jewish people and Israeli citizens as suffering from PTSD and being roundly ignored by the other panelists. He feels frustrated because he agrees and, as a psychologist himself, has been trying for years to gain some professional acceptance of that view to no avail.

I do believe there is an underlying, serious, across-the-board mental and emotional pathology that is centered primarily in Israel but which also has a strong presence in the neocon bloc in the U.S., many of whom are of Jewish heritage. It is a tragedy that much of U.S. foreign policy is built around if not actually dictated by that pathology.

The Stephen Harper Conservatives of Canada are revealing the extent of their partisanship towards Israel more and more every day,
including canceling funding of any NGO's critical of Israel's policies (KAIROS, etc).
Now there is some confusion about a Ministers statement that "An attack on Israel would be considered an attack on Canada.

David Frum's mother, Barbara, was for many years co-host of As It Happens, a dinner hour current affairs program on Canada's CBC AM. She was the model of an assured, knowledgeable and fair interviewer, and her passing was mourned across the country. Mention of her son usually provokes eye rolling and astonishment. Your characterization of him is accurate. These war-mongers have no shame.

It will be interesting to see how they go about calling Dr. Hajo Meyer an anti-semite for expressing his views on the treatmeant of the Palestinians by Israel.

From a post at Democratic Underground the Auschwitz survivor, Dr. Hajo Meyer speaks on the plight of Palestinians at hands of Israel and the obligation of Jews to speak against such treatment.

And they got Jane Jacobs from us. I think they got the better end of that deal. Prof. Cole, maybe we could revive that old TV-show game (from MTV? Comedy Central?) of "Dead, Alive or Canadian."

Excellent, calm and reasoned analysis, BTW, of the "anti-Semite" hysteria.

I agree Frum has dual loyalties but they do not include loyalty to Canada. I hope you were being comedic about "war industries in Ottawa" - very funny. That's sort of like citing the Catholic Archbishop of Mecca.

The uses of the anti-Semitism attack or self-hating Jew attack to quash any objection to the policy of the Israeli government is horrid but also frightening in terms of how effective it can seemingly be. The Israeli government must be able to be criticized without fear.

Juan, I can assure you that even right-wing Canadian politicians, who are cajoled by washinton into toeing the line with American foreign policy, do not benefit politically when there's sabre rattling in Washington.

As far as the Canadian war industry goes, such a thing remains non-existent, unless you're talking about Bombardier, whose main production line consists of hockey rink zambonie engines.

I remember reading a couple of years ago that active duty Israeli Army personnel, in uniform, can criticize Israeli policy with fewer repercussions than American public figures like Jimmy Carter. Is that an exaggeration, or is it accurate?

You start off talking about "The Decline of the Israeli Right", but it looks like the Israeli right did very well in the last actual Israeli election. The "decline" you refer to, as you describe it, it sounds like you're mostly talking about a decline of influence over American politics.

It seems to me that the right wing in Israel doesn't need to win U.S. lobbying battles, or blog wars, or the approval of the American Jewish community, so long as they can still win approval and elections in Israel. In fact from what little I understand of Israeli politics it seems like the right wing in Israel thrives on isolation, so it may even help them if the Israeli electorate feels America has turned against them.

Is anything happening at all to indicate the right is diminishing in power or influence in Israel? You mention a diplomatic incident that has caused domestic embarrassment for Likud, but that does not seem like the kind of event that changes a voters' perception of their government.

Robert Fisk has a great source in Abu Dhabi:

'"[T]he British passports are real. They are hologram pictures with the biometric stamp. They are not forged or fake. The names were really there. If you can fake a hologram or biometric stamp, what does this mean?"

'The voice – I know the man and his origins well – wants to talk. "There are 18 people involved in the killing of Mahmoud al-Mabhouh. Besides the 11 already named, there are two Palestinians who are being interrogated and five others, including a woman. She was part of the team that staked out the hotel lobby." Two hours later, an SMS arrives on my Beirut phone from Abu Dhabi,...

'"ONE MORE THING," it says in capital letters, then continues in lower case. "The command room of the operation was in Austria meaning the suspects when here did not talk to each other but thru the command room on separate lines to avoid detection or linking themselves to one another ... but it was detected and identified OK??"'

It seems clear that biometric stamps are a good way to deter terrorism, once terrorists know they can easilly be caught and prosecuted as it cannot be faked without very elaborate surgical intervention.

And on a related note about US neocons and their crimes, have you heard that nano-thermite, a very very very hightech explosive--was discovered through forensic examination of WTC dust and the finding published in a peer-reviewed journal? Niels H. Harrit, Jeffrey Farrer, Steven E. Jones, Kevin R. Ryan, Frank M. Legge, Daniel Farnsworth, Gregg Roberts, James R. Gourley, Bradley R. Larsen, "Active Thermitic Material Discovered in Dust from the 9/11 World Trade Center Catastrophe," Open Chemical Physics Journal, Vol. 2 (April 3, 2009): 7-31

Further information from the source that informed me about the nano-thermite:

'In a German interview in May 2009, Dr. Harrit said: "There are no experts on nano-thermite without connections to the military…. This stuff has only been prepared under military contracts in the USA and probably in bigger allied countries. This is secret military research…It was not prepared in a cave in Afghanistan."7

'Chemist Kevin Ryan, another co-author, had reported in an earlier article that explosive nano-thermite, which may be painted onto surfaces, was developed by US government scientists at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories.8

'A United States Department of Defense special publication confirms that work on these "energetic materials" has long been "performed in laboratories within all military services."9

'According to a June 2009 statement by Britain's prestigious Institute of Nanotechnology,10 the Harrit study "provides indisputable evidence that a highly engineered explosive called nano-thermite was found in the dust of all three buildings that came down on 9/11 2001 in New York city. [sic] This advanced explosive incorporating nanotechnology is only available to sophisticated military labs."11

'It thus became known by mid-2009 that explosives of military origin, probably in the United States, had been involved in the World Trade Center collapses.'

It would seem veils are dropping and some hypothetical conspiracies are now being backed by facts which allows them to become theories.

On the odious Mr. Frum, I am sure Barbara Frum would have been revolted to see how David has turned out. I might add that his sister Linda was appointed last summer to the Senate of Canada by the Harperite cabal in Ottawa. Her main claim to fame was a book which rated the social amenities at undergraduate programmes in Canadian universities. Harmless, banal and entirely in keeping with the Harper communications strategy.

Their father, Murray, is now a billionaire property developer. He started out as a dentist and invested shrewdly in retail locations. The Frum juniors were born with silver spoons in their mouths, soon to replaced with glib and vapid analysis.

On the matter of defence industries in Canada, there is a company in Kitchener which makes a family of modified and enhanced versions of the M16 assault rifle, the C7. This weapon is highly valued by special forces around the world. Substantial quantities of small arms ammunition are also manufactured in Canada. The LAV family of light armoured vehicles saw first light in a GM factory in London, Ontario. Not sure whether they still make them or not. Other than those items, there is not much left from the colossal arms industry which existed at the end of WWII. It was allowed to decay quite deliberately for the most part.

Oh, there is definitely real antisemitism out there disguised as "concern for the suffering Palestinians", of that there is no doubt. But Prof. Cole has very nicely delineated the often successful attempt to conflate anti-radical-rightwing, antimilitarist, anitiracist progressivism with antisemitism and antiIsraelism. Unfortunately too much of the left tacitly agrees with that; implicitly ceding the pro-Israel position to the rightwing, as though they agreed there were no conceivable way for Israel to survive without keeping Palestinians in thrall. As though the rightwing militaristic strategy is working so well. To the rightwing, if you're for Israel, you must be rightwing; whereas to too many of the left, if you are against the rightwing, you must be against Israel.

Having lived through the error of progressives in the 60s and 70s in allowing the rightwing to wrap themselves in the American flag and thereby paint themselves in the antiAmerican corner, when in fact it is progressive values that make America, I am not happy to see the same error being repeated.

I also do not see some mysterious cabal of rightwing Jews driving rightwing policy, with some inordinate focus on Israel; rightwing blacks, women, Arabs, Muslims, Europeans, Canadians, etc. etc. etc. feel the same way about Israel as rightwing Jews; conversely, all those groups share the same attitudes towards Latin America, Africa, the United States, the former Soviet bloc, African Americans, gay rights, etc. etc. etc., not just agreeing on Israeli politics. In fact, I see rightwingism as the major supernational divided loyalty; I see Cheney, for example, as caring quite a bit less for the United States than he does for his vision of a world where the elite manage the masses.

Israel is just another place where the neverending conflict between power and progressivism is cuirrently active, whose importance is overly puffed up. Does anyone really believe that 9/11 would not have occurred, had Israel and Palestine made peace under Clinton? Does anyone really believe that the conditions even in Gaza are the worst of any suffering population in the world? That Israel is the most oppressive regime now in existence? That millions of Africans, even Muslims, wouldn't immediately give their right arms to get a comparatively safe home in Gaza, let alone the West Bank (rather than see them chopped off during the next random incursion of the seriously successful genocidal forces they fear)?

1. Does anyone here believe that 9/11 would not have occurred had Israel/Palestine made peace? Yes. Ever since his 1986 Frontiline interview, Osama has consistently and continuously referred to the injustices that are heaped on the Palestinians by Israel. It is obvious that the plight of the Palestinians was a major mover.

2. Does anyone really believe that the conditions in Gaza are the worst in the world? Yes. No, wait, the conditions in King Leopold's Congo were maybe worse. But even the Belgians did not fence in the Congo. And the Hutus did manage to kill more Tutsis. And let's not forget Pol Pot and Cambonia. Since Israel has placed itself at the same level with Pol Pot's Cambodia, how can it possibly claim to be "a light onto the nations" and "the only democracy in the Middle East"?

3. That Israel is the most opporessive regime now in existence? If you're a Palestinian it is. Can you name another regime that claims to be a "democracy" and fences in parts of its own population? That boasts about keeping a major part of its own population on a starvation diet? That has roads and colonies reserved for one faith only?

4. That millions of Africans wouldn't give their right arm to move to Gaza? Ah, the white man's burden, or in this case, the ziosnist's burden is a heavy one indeed.

Frum became a US citizen in 2007? That's very interesting. I clearly remember him talking about 9/11 and the Iraqi and Afghani conflicts on US television long before that date, and referring to "we", ie including himself as a US citizen. There was no ambiguity.

Then, he would be (and still is) welcomed back by the CBC's various hosts and producers as a "Canadian". I'm sure that this has happened at least once since 2007. Either way, he's never confronted over his role in fomenting illegal wars resulting in civilian deaths by the hundreds of thousands as Prof. Cole has confronted him here.

That said, please don't send him back. Perhaps you can use him to make Celine Dion seem a little less dreadful, but I'm not sure.

Martin Indyk, the architect of the "dual containment" strategy of Iran and Iraq under Clinton, was also a foreign citizen -- Israeli and Australian -- before he was appointed to a top-level policy-making position under Clinton. What's worse, he was also in with AIPAC and the founder of AIPAC's PR talkshop the Washington INstitute For Near East Policy. There were suggestions that his appointment was a quid-pro-quo with AIPAC and later, that he was suspected of being a mole for Israel. He went on to become the US ambassador to Israel, violating the established rules about conflicts of interest.

About Dan at 2:06 PM said "I clearly remember [David Frum] talking about 9/11 and the Iraqi and Afghani conflicts on US television long before that date, and referring to "we", ie including himself as a US citizen."

He was not necessarily including himself as a US citizen. He was more likely speaking as a North American nationalist. Frum, like Harper, is a North American nationalist. They see the people of North America (Canada and the USA) as a single nation whose national territory is divided into two sovereign states (analogous to the status of Germany and Austria in the eyes of German nationalists). In addition, as nationalists, they believe that their nation - the North Americans - is morally superior to others and is in an unjustly and dangerously weak position vis-a-vis others. That is how they rationalize their aggressive militarism in their own minds. To North American nationalists (sometimes called "Continentalists" in Canada), the 9/11 attack was an attack on the North American people just as much as it was an attack on the USA. So for Canadians like Frum and Harper it makes perfect sense to say that "we" were attacked on that day.

I agree that David Frum should be tried. To make the case for war with lies is a war crime. Maybe that's why he took up U.S. citizenship as the U.S. does not recognize the ICC. Canada, at least the last time I looked, still does.

As many have mentioned here in comments, his mother, Barbara Frum, was an intelligent and fair journalist.

Stephen Harper, the prime minister of Canada, was equating opposition to Israeli government policy to anti-Semitism as far back as 2008.

Harper also said, "Some of the criticism brewing in Canada against the state of Israel, including from some members of Parliament, is similar to the attitude of Nazi Germany in the Second World War, Prime Minister Stephen Harper warned yesterday.

"I guess my fear is what I see happening in some circles is (an) anti-Israeli sentiment, really just as a thinly disguised veil for good old-fashioned anti-Semitism, which I think is completely unacceptable," Harper said in an interview with CJAD radio.

Stephen Harper appointed David Frum's sister, Linda, to the Canadian Senate in 2009.

"On August 27, 2009 she was appointed to the Senate by Prime Minister Stephen Harper. She has a Conservative affliliation and represents Ontario. She serves on the Banking, Trade and Commerce Committee and the Transport and Communications Committee."

I hadn't heard about her "bestselling author" career. To laud her for writing a book about the amenities of Canadian universities is like giving her an award for writing a phone book.

Stockwell Day, fundamentalist Christian and then-Foreign Minister for Canada, signed a Public Security Agreement which ties Canada to protecting Israel no matter what it does. He first denied then confirmed that such an agreement existed.

Peter Kent, Conservative cabinet minister for Harper's regime in a recent interview:

Junior Foreign Affairs minister Peter Kent is suggesting Canada would rush to Israel's defence in a military confrontation, telling a Toronto publication that “an attack on Israel would be considered an attack on Canada.”

But he later declined to say whether this means that Canada would automatically declare war on an aggressor attacking Israel.

Do the rest of us get to have a say in any of this? I guess not.

Most arms work done in Canada is done as subsidiary work for big multinationals. Even then you'll have to look long and hard for examples.
We do have way too many warmongers however. Why can't north american voters see the sense in barring anyone of dual citizenship from government power though?
