Australian Press Releases Abu Ghraib Photos

For those with strong stomachs, more Abu Ghraib torture photos may be seen here.

They are courtesy of the Sydney Morning Herald.

The Australian press got hold of 60 of these some time ago and is now releasing them. Presumably they are among the photos, the release of which President Obama is now attempting to block.

Prof. Cole,

I think these photos had already been released. I'd seen these already -- Torture vs. Civilization vs. Family

This terrible pictures were released already three years ago, you only have to check the date in the website and even the URL reflects the date. I think is right to spread them as an example of the kind of pictures the Obama administration doesn't want to show, but some people is telling that the SMH released them today and this is not true (I think the Daily Telegraph started it). We (the people who oppose this) don't need to twist the facts even in the slightest way to be right and it is very counterproductive to do it.

Here are all the photos published three years ago by The Raw Story (taken from the SMH):

http://rawstory.com/news/2005/Australian_TV_station_releases_new_Abu_0215.html

This article seems to be the origin of the false new releasing:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/northamerica/usa/barackobama/5325444/New-prisoner-abuse-photographs-emerge-despite-US-bid-to-block-publication.html

It does not offer any link to the SMH or any new photograph and it says this:

"The images emerged from Australia yesterday where they were originally obtained by the channel SBS in 2006 in the wake of the Abu Ghraib scandal. They were not distributed around the world at the time but are now believed to be among those the president is trying to block."

Isn't odd that the "president is trying to block" photographs in the hands of... an Asutralian newspaper?

These are not new. I have used some of them in my own blogging in the last few years. I don't know who is trying to fool who, but it is pretty lame.

Interesting value system at work. Obama, and his establishment body guard, are afraid release of the photos (already in the public domain) will increase anti-Americanism. But, the photos of the recent "air power" carnage in that Afghanistan village don't seem to bother.

We no longer torture (or there will never be a photographic record if we do). But, yes, we will continue to atomize non-combatant men, women, and children who get in our line (cloud) of fire. It's a price they have to pay for the freedom and prosperity that lies just over the rainbow.

These photo's are nothing. We've already seen much worse. This is a Murdoch led dis-information operation to muddy the waters.

The fact that many "supposedy unreleased" pictures have been in the public domain for three years hasn't prompted the right to attribute increased violence to these particular pictures.....but yet to tell them that would only elicit more claims of my being anti-American, anti-blue jeans, anti-Coke...anti anything supposedly American....ah, intellectual consistency.
