Thank you for linking to this. I haven't had the chance to see the interview in full and this is a nice clip from it.

You can view the entire interview and/or read the transcript at the Bill Moyers website. Included are video clips from the sermons and a documentary on Wright done in the past. The interview is in two parts and runs about 45 minutes.

In his sermon Rev. Wright asked God to damn America for its past and present racist policies. What's wrong with that? That's his job.

It is not the function of religion to bless whatever a nation does. On a church near me is a large banner: "One Nation Under God, Indivisible" The implication is that America and God are indivisible. But don't ask God to pledge allegiance to a wrongful nation. Don't ask me, either, for that matter. I don't pledge allegiance to George Bush and neither should Rev. Wright.

Rev. Wright is a patriot in the best tradition of America. Edward Abbey: "I know my own nation best. That's why I despise it the most. And I know and love my own people, too, the swine. I'm a patriot. A dangerous man."

Oh, but apparently our country under the USA Patriot Act is not supposed to countenance patriots. We should all get in step and salute the commander-in-chief. Well phooey on that.

I was watcing the View last week, and Elizabeth started up again as to the Rev's impact on Obama, as if Obama was "made over in his image" or brainwashed over the twenty years of attendance. And it occurred to me that this is the difference between the Democratic-mind and the Republican-mind. The first is said to be more flexible, capable of holding two or three thoughts at once and critically assessing all. The Republican mind-set is to be directed and accept direction. So that when Republicans attend church services, they come away believing whatever is said more often than Democrats. So whether or not the whole of each sermon would negate the parts excerpted, Republicans would believe ALL that was said, uncritically. Perhaps this is why Southern Baptists preachers have such an effect on their parishioners.....more so than Northern preachers. Just a thought.
