Moyers and Wright at PBS, Parts 3-4

The other two parts of Bill Moyers' interview with Reverend Wright are below.

Journalism should be about explaining things and setting them in context, not about 'gotcha' moments. As the Web becomes better at video, we bloggers will set up our own networks, and people thirsty for the real back story will come to our sites. (Big Corporate Media knows this, which is why they want to kill the internet by getting rid of Net Neutrality). Moyers is one of the few major interviewers who eschews the gotcha for real news. Our country would be much impoverished without him.

Thanks for the youtubes.

I haven't seen, but have read the sermon from which the "God damn America" soundbyte was taken and I agree with that sermon completely.

I haven't run into the sermon with the "US government invented AIDS for black people", in fact I haven't even heard the soundbyte, just talk of it. I imagine it might be a rumination along the lines of the Tuskeegee Airmen, when the US government knowingly, purposefully did not treat the diseases of black airmen because they thought they needed a few more data points on the course of untreated disease.

The idea is to pull your head out of the sand, pull up your socks, find out where you are and go on from there.

But the US is burrowing ever deeper into the sand. Wanting to remove one's head from the sand is the mark of the "America hater".

So "America lovers" are identified with the willfully ignorant.

Except of course that no one is more familiar with the minutiae of their sins than those who deny them.

For they crop up in every context and must be denied anew in every context, until the number of things denied exceeds the number of things affirmed and nihilism takes the helm.

And when you look at the behavior of governments of the US and of Israel nothing is more striking than their nihilism.

For make no mistake, the regimes are joined at the hip at this point. Two monstrous Neocon regimes, the mirror images of their self-conceptions, lurching from denial to denial, war crime to war crime... it's almost as they're trying to commit suicide by cop.

Th only cop on their beat is the economic cop. The finance cop. And they're going to ride their denial all the way doiwn to the very end. Just like Hillary Clinton. And take us all with them. Just like Jim Jones.

It doesn't have to be this way folks. Gravel/McKinney/Nader. Start now to build an alternative. We're going to need to in any case.

This is interesting in an academic way, Juan, but everyone has moved on.

The Right has made its point of there being a social divide- if only in their own eyes and those of Middle America- that Obama straddles less than perfectly, and tips to the "other" side on when in doubt.

Btw, there is growing sense that the Obama campaign is getting gassed and starting to slip. That Ipsos poll out today is pretty nasty news for Obama triumphalists. And the SUSA poll of Indiana shows Obama's appeal in the Midwest stagnant or in decline- if Ohio wasn't telling enough.

I have posted complete sets of the entire Moyers, NAACP, and National Press Club appearances by Wright on my blog, which is at niqnaq.wordpress. com.
I shan't give exact links because they are near the top of the blog and should be visible on the list of recent posts or by scrolling.
They all come from hard work by people who have posted them to their own accounts on youtube, but I have collected them all together.

Bill Moyers Journal Transcript: April 25, 2008

BILL MOYERS: What man meant for evil God meant for good.

REVEREND WRIGHT: That's a quote from Joseph, in the bible, the Book of Genesis.

BILL MOYERS: And what do you take that to mean?

REVEREND WRIGHT: That Human beings, many times, do things for nefarious purposes. And God can take that and turn something- make something good out of it. That, for instance, using that Joseph passage, when his brother sold him into slavery, and they thought, after daddy's gone, he's gonna get us. And Joseph reassured them by saying, "No, no, what you meant for evil, God has turned into something good. I'm not trying to do revenge or payback. In fact, restoration is what God is. And I restore you. As brothers, we're all brothers." That those sound bytes, those snippets were taken for nefarious purposes. That God can take that and do something very positive for it- with it. That, in Philadelphia, in response to the sound bytes, in response to the snippets, in Philadelphia Senator Obama made a very powerful speech in terms of our need as a nation to address the whole issue of race. That's something good that's already starting. That because of you guys playing these sound bytes now what's getting ready to happen as something very positive, and something very powerful that God can take what you meant to try to hurt somebody to help the nation come to grips with truth. To help a nation come to grips with miseducation. To help a nation come to grips with things we don't like to talk about.
