Miscellany and Annapolis

On the Annapolis "meeting" (downgraded from a conference), Mark Matthews of the Baltimore Sun contrasts the preparation and success of the Madrid peace conference in 1991 under Bush Sr., with the likely failure to accomplish much in Annapolis.

See also the comments of Dick Norton on Annapolis at our Global Affairs group blog.

A reminder that can sign up to receive Informed Comment by email if you don't like to read on the web. Tell your friends-- this is a side of the site that I would like to build up (at any one time about 1,000 readers get the postings this way, but the subscription list does not seem to grow beyond that number.)

And remember that mynew book, Napoleon's Egypt: Invading the Middle East is the perfect Christmas present for that friend or relative who seems so hard to shop for.

I am not willing to bet yet, but I predict that Annapolis will stun people everywhere by adopting the Saudi 2002 initiative: back to 1967borders in return for normalizing relations with Israel.

Israel will be forced to accept by no other than a desperate Bush who does not need the US Zionists anymore, and more importantly feels that they are responsible for sinking him in Iraq.

Does your subscription list include those of us who read your blog daily on Google Reader and other news readers?

Dan, the subscription list is just email. Some readers prefer it to the Web.

I read from Yahoo...I've the notion that many readers would rather avoid emails, as their junk filters may be cumbersome, and/or prefer to keep their boxes as 'slim' as possible.

This is not a peace conference at all, as there is one significant player missing from the discussion.

IRAN.

This whole conference is basically the US threatening and cajoling other countries to not do anything when and if US takes actions against Iran. Not necessarily open warfare actions.

And lets face it - many Arabic governments fear and loathe the Persian regional power.
