Cheney Conniving at Iran War
Says Bush Cannot be Trusted

Shorter Steve Clemons:

Cheney and his staff are colluding with the Neoconservatives at the American Enterprise Institute and with Israeli hawks to sideline Condi Rice's negotiations with Iran by getting up an Israeli cruise missile strike on Iranian civilian nuclear research facilities at Natanz, in hopes that this move will push the US into a war posture with Iran.

Clemons is very well connected in Washington and assures me he has multiple-sourced this story. It seems entirely plausible to me.

Well, that could be good news.....
I imagine behavior like that could allow Bush to arrest Cheney...secretly and hold him without access to an attorney...and waterboard him, make him stand all day, etc.

The Independent is reporting today that a British think tank, called BASIC, has examined the Bush cabal's allegations of an Iranian hand in the Iraq violence and found the evidence to be wanting...

More importantly, the think tank points out that the Bushiites might be blaming Iran in order to rile up the home base in preparation for a Bush War in Iran.

Links to BASIC document and reports are on my blog .

It's a real case of General Ripper. When I was young and innocent, and watched Dr. Strangelove when it came out in '64, we all believed that the US president would be solid and stop this kind of thing. No such luck now.

Though Cheney is actually a combination of Ripper and Turgidson, the air force commander who wanted to nuke the Soviets "with acceptable casualties" to the US of 10-20 million.

Just when you think it can't get any worse, it does:

"A senior leader of the Mahdi militia army has been shot dead by Iraqi special forces with British support, on the day that Moqtada al-Sadr, the radical Shia cleric, appeared in public in Iraq for the first time in three months.

Mr Sadr, who has loose overall control of the Mahdi army, attended Friday prayers in the southern city of Kufa in his first appearance since the US launched its security crackdown in February.

Meanwhile in Basra, Wissam al-Waili, 23, described as the leader of the Mahdi militia in city, was killed in a gun battle with British soldiers, according to Iraqi police.

The militant leader, also known as Abu Qadir, was shot dead along with three aides when British troops tried to arrest him after he left a mosque in Jumhoriyah, a residential area in central Basra."

i suppose there was a time when, if the U.S. Military were to bomb or otherwise attack IRAN, for whatever reason, say ~ the mushroom cloud vision thing ~ then the American electorate would have rallied around The President, there would be calls to "stop the debate! we're engaged, so support the troops!" and so forth...

...just as invading IRAQ was ideal political cover, another political life-cycle for the failed American President's campaign against al Qaeda in Afghanistan...

...a lesson apparently learned well by Mr. Bush43 after taking painful stock of Mr. Bush41's failure to sustain even the support of his own political party as anything of substance beyond that all too brief time the painfully Visionless Man was playing the role of painless "war-leader".

But imho that time has past: we feel the pain, at the pump ~ if not our snug guts; It's probably, what ~30 months too late, politically, if not practically ~ for war-mongering to work its magic again. Whatever the casus belli this time, this electorate would not rally 'round The President, they (and the Officer Corps) would roundly consider Mr. President profoundly insane.

The real danger is that if the U.S. Officer Corps could not stop either He, they (the CheneyCons) or ISRAEL from starting another war, America would not have a mere Constitutional Crisis, as it does today, with this tug -of- war between Congress and Executive Branch war powers -vs- funding carte blanche fiasco. No.

We would then be facing, in my humble opinion the very real possibility of a military coup d'etat : for there are members of the Officer Corps who would never stand by and allow such jeopardy, such a degradation of America's military might ~ if this rogue Presidency or that impotent Congress be damned by having to take matters into their own hands, then so be it.

History does reveal, even at the height of the McCarthy era HUAC hearings: that it is one thing to fool around with State consuls, or media celebrities, or simple citizens; But don't even think about going against the grain of those military Staff Officers who know that RealPolitik is, after all, "just a party," and RealPower flows from the barrel of a gun.

Isn't this a high crime? He seems to be undermining his own secretary of state and proceeding with his own flavor of 'foreign policy'... bomb something... without checks & balances by any government agency.

Not to mention planning a nuclear attack on Natanz, surely causing a release of radiation, without his mommy's permission, and he's essentially acting as an agent of a foreign government by playing middleman to Israel.

Maybe he's just trying to show that young whippersnapper Doug Feith that Ol' 'Dick' Cheney has 'cohones' too!

But really... What DOES one have to do to get impeached nowadays? Is it still possible?

Does Israel have cruise missiles capable of hitting Natanz? Honest Question. I'm wondering militarily how an Israeli strike on Natanz would work and what their options are.

What happens in response to this is, of course, completely predictable... Iran then acts as if it was attacked by the US, it fires antiship cruise missiles at shipping and US ships in the strait of Hormuz, the US retaliates, SCIRI and Sadrists shut down the supply lines south of Baghdad and Iraq completely blows up... Hopefully the government and military of Israel isn't stupid enough to do this...

I put that question to a an acquaintance of mine on a list I frequent, and this is the documentation that resulted.

It's too long and detailed to post here, so it's [here] on my site.

If Iran attacks the US fleet in retaliation for an attack on Iran by Israel, it will represent a total breakdown of the Iranian intelligence service.

Not necessarily. Israel's mostly failed invasion of S. Lebanon was done with full approval of the US. If Israel attacks Iran with cruise missiles using US capabilities, it could be seen as an attack by the US too. This is why having Israel as an ally is such a liability. The US national security state wants reliable, pliant proxies, not full blown rogue states with King David ideologies.

Cheney is certifiably insane, but that doesnt mean that he isnt full of craftiness and guile. He is. He also lacks any compassion or conscience, regardless of what Mary Cheney says. He is determined to attack Iran. He is obsessed with it. In the Bush Administration, the lunatics have taken over the asylum long ago. I would not doubt any report that says they will attack Iran. The thought evidently never leaves their demented minds; and they plot and plan it continuously. War is their god. It excites them both mentally and physiologically. The Freudian implications are endless for this cabal of corrupt crazies. I do find it fascinating to contemplate what the military commanders will do. I have been reading these rumors over the Internet for some weeks now. Well, the Internet is full of rumors. They sprout like weeds, but some go on to bear fruit. One article, since disappeared, is that the field commanders in Iraq will revolt if the "surge" is continued past September. They are reportedly weary of gasbag politicians using human life to play political games. I wont hold my breath nor stand on one leg waiting for such a revolt to happen. It is unlikely. And yet.....In my opinion, it would be one of this country's finest hours. It would show the world that we still value human life; that we do have compassion; that we will stand up against two-bit politicians, arrogant warmongers, and pathological liars. It would shock the world, shatter complacency, and scare the bejesus out of small, greedy minds. We would be in free fall. But, just maybe, we would land in the light and avoid the abyss.
